When You Reach Me

This is the cover for Rebecca Stead's new novel, When You Reach Me, and a couple of the alternative early stage sketches. I'm always curious about the ones that were left on the floor... Gone With the Wind, for instance, was nearly called Tote the Weary Load. The Great Gatsby was almost Incident at West Egg, and my brother narrowly escaped being named Peregrine.
All that aside, this is a really, really good book.

I think it's really interesting to see the early stage drawings as well, especially as these are so different from the actual cover. These are great!

Sophie, this is incredible to see!

I love your final cover drawings AND your earlier sketches -- kind of thrilling and otherworldly . . .

I'm honored to have your work on the cover of WHEN YOU REACH ME.

(and I'm in awe of your talent.)

First, I collect children's books with the name RUBY in the title or that have Ruby characters as RUBY is my late mother's name. I cherish the book RUBY'S WISH and have always hoped I could someday tell the illustrator how much I appreciate those pictures...and now I have found you! Thank you!

Thank you also for sharing the early cover proposals for WHEN YOU REACH ME...a book I devoured the day it came out! You have captured so well in all the proposals some of my feelings and visions about the settings as I read the book....

Hi Sophie - I KNEW that was your work on the cover. Great visual interpretation of the book's intimate neighborhood story. And great book also - thanks Rebecca Stead. I'm very glad it's doing well.

FYI I've a new blog that focuses on writing and illustrating for children, and I'm also wanting to feed my work into it:
timmartinjournal.wordpress.com
Still working out themes and structure, so it's a bit all over the place. A website is to come (associated with my writing work, not architecture/design work). Anyhow - let me know what you think. I'll put your website URL on, if you feel comfortable with that.

Congratulations again!

xxx Tim
